Surfing in Sri Lanka

From hikkaduwa along the southern coast line down to Hiriketiya there are some amazing surf breaks for all levels of surfing . Sri Lanka has been known for its warm water and ling right handed waves .

There are a few spots along the coast line that are known for intermediate surf breaks lazy left in midigama and last right in midigama . Located in midigama also is a popular right handed reef break called Rams right a short little barrel on a nice reef. 10 minutes drive north and you have Kabalanas the Rock nice A frame beach break with and easy paddle .

Weligama Surf Schools

weligama is very popular now for beginner surfers due to the large flat weligama bay where you will find many surf schools to teach you lessons , also in weligama you have the option to surf at weligama reef called Fisherman’s a nice long boarders right hander and on big swell it breaks in multiple spots for a short board. Mirissa has the most famous well known Instagram friendly right hander point it can get a little crowded but usually there is enough waves to share , not a super long wave but sometimes they do connect all the way through.

If you jump into a tuk tuk from Mirissa and head another 10 minutes south to a beach called madiha and there you will find a right and a left . This wave holds a lot of swell and holds its shape, can get busy most mornings and great little cafes around that area for some nice coffee after a long surf.

Once headed further south about 45 minutes you will then reach Hirikitiya bay, this place is a long boarders heaven long left hander off the point that lasts for about 30 seconds of pure bliss , it’s more of an experienced surfers point break due to its sharp reef but I’m in the middle of the bay it’s very popular for its surf lessons and beginners.

The best time to visit all of these south west beaches is between Nov and April for the best swell and weather conditions, if you visit Sri Lanka at another time of the year your best option for surfing would be on the east coast of Aruguym Bay
