How to come for whale watching

You have to wake up early either you close to mirissa or faraway. Almost all boat are leaving by mirissa harbor by 7am and at least by 6.30am you have to reach the destination.there are two entrance to mirissa harbor See the map So ask your operator which gate you should enter.if you stay in mirissa you may ask pickup service by tuk tuk which is normally includes to ticket price.also you can still ask for a tuk tuk if you bit away and you will have to pay little extra but its so convenient because tuk tuk driver know exact location where the your boat anchored.

Even people from colombo or tangalle are coming morning whale watching tours.it takes 2 hours from colombo to reach mirissa through express way.so ask your driver always use expressway and exit by kokmaduwa. from there you have to reach weligama town and turn left to matara side and its only 4km from weligama there are 7km from kokmaduwa to mirissa. Roads are quite tricky to find so better look for map

Are sightings guaranteed?

First thing you have to understand that whales are biggest animals that can travel huge distance and other thing is ocean is vast. Thats why mirissa is so unique, here blue whales are seen year around.

so why some says they didn’t see whales on their tour?answer is simple some days whales are not in closer distance to shore that a boat can observe with in 4-5 hours.record shows there are 5-10 such unlucky days per year. Another true fact is some days of sightings are perfect that you can see everything whales dolphins and even turtles or whale shark. some days only one whale and it also on moving so you can see only a dorsal fin of whale.those things might happen in nature and we cant resist on that.

Are you get refunded if you dont see whales?

Answer is no. Before 2019 february there wasn’t any tax charges for whale watching ticket but now there is 18.75$ gov tax for each ticket and boat companies get less than that per ticket however companies have to spend for boat maintenance,fuel,staff,harbor charges and breakfast.so sadly you will not get refund any if you don’t see whales on your tour. Some companies may offer you free trip but surely you will have to pay gov tax at least.
